Unemployment Rate at 4.4% in April

In April 2024, the unemployment rate in Hungary stood at 4.4%, according to data published by the Central Statistical Office (KSH).

In April 2024, the average number of employed persons aged 15–74 increased by 39,000 from the same period of the previous year, to 4.749 million.

The number of unemployed persons was 217,000, the statistics agency noted.

According to the administrative data of the National Employment Service, the number of registered jobseekers at the end of April 2024 decreased by 2.1% to 231,000 compared to a year earlier.

February-April Unemployment Grows Slightly Year-on-year

In the period February–April 2024, the average number of employed persons aged 15-74 was 4.739 million, about 41,000 more than a year earlier. For men, the number of employed persons was essentially unchanged at 2.496 million, while for women it rose by 39,000 to 2.243 million.

The domestic primary labor market employed 4.567 million people, 38,000 ore than a year earlier. While the number of people working abroad was up by 11,000 to 110,000, the number of public workers decreased by 8,000 to 62,000.

Among 15-64-year-olds, the employment rate grew by 0.6 percentage points to 74.9%. The rate remained unchanged for men at 78.7%, while for women it increased by 1.1 percentage points to 71.1%.

In the period February–April 2024, the number of unemployed persons aged 15-74 increased year-on-year by 27,000 to 224,000 persons, while the unemployment rate rose by 0.5 percentage points to 4.5%.

For males, the number of unemployed was 124,000 and their unemployment rate rose by 0.6 percentage points to 4.7%. For females, the number of unemployed was 101,000 and their unemployment rate rose by 0.3 percentage points to 4.3%.

The average time spent looking for a job was 9.5 months, some 39% of all unemployed had been looking for a job for less than 3 months, and 35% for at least a year.
