UN Proclaims World Fair Play Day on Hungarian Initiative

The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution, submitted by Hungary, proclaiming May 19 World Fair Play Day, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in a post on social media this week, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

Szijjártó said the resolution had the backing of 92 UN member states, including China, the United Kingdom, Germany, South Korea, Indonesia, Argentina, and the United Arab Emirates.

The resolution will strengthen the spirit of sportsmanship and the values it represents, in particular the observance of rules, respect for the opponent and combating violence and doping, he added.

He also pointed to the role of the Olympic ideal in promoting peace.
