GVH said the company operating the www.shopolo.hu website made unsubstantiated claims about its product during the first wave of the pandemic in Hungary, selling more than 10,000 units over two weeks in March 2020.
The economic competition office found that the sanitizers had no licenses for distribution in either the European Union or Hungary and a test of the Innovation and Technology Ministry's food and chemical laboratory established that the products had no antibacterial or antimicrobial effects.
It was also established that the company infringed EU rules about the marketing of disinfectants and failed to indicate the ingredients, the names of active substances, the contact details of the manufacturer and distributor, and the safety information.
The company also misinformed consumers about free shipping, GVH added.
