The annual increase was 2.4% in both unadjusted and calendar-adjusted terms. The monthly decline was measured using seasonally and calendar-adjusted data.
Food retail sales rose 0.5% year on year, adjusted for calendar effects. Sales at non-specialized food and beverage stores, which accounted for 77% of food retailing, increased 1.9%. Specialized food, beverage and tobacco stores recorded a 4.8% decline.
Non-food retail sales grew 5%. Within the category, sales at pharmaceutical, medical goods and cosmetics stores rose 5.4%, while non-specialized stores selling manufactured goods recorded a 4.2% increase.
Sales at textile, clothing and footwear stores grew 2.7%, followed by furniture and electrical goods stores at 1% and shops selling books, computer equipment and other specialized goods at 0.6%. Secondhand stores saw sales fall 3.3%.
Mail-order and online retailing, which accounted for 8.3% of total retail sales and covered a broad range of goods, expanded 12% year on year.
Automotive fuel sales rose 3.1%. Sales volume at motor vehicle and parts and accessories stores, which are excluded from the retail trade figures, increased 8% on an unadjusted basis.
At current prices, domestic retail sales totaled HUF 1,787 bln in August. Food stores generated 48% of total turnover, non-food retailers accounted for 36%, and fuel stations contributed 16%.
In January-August, calendar-adjusted retail sales volume increased 4.3% compared with the same period a year earlier. Food sales rose 2.2%, non-food sales increased 5.6%, and automotive fuel sales grew 7.5%.
