The legislation passed Tuesday with 193 votes in favor.

The change gives Christmas Eve permanent public holiday status, removing the need to designate it as a day off through annual adjustments to the work schedule.

According to the bill’s explanatory notes, December 24 is an integral part of Hungary’s Christmas celebrations, holding particular significance for family gatherings, festive preparations and community and religious traditions.

The legislation aims to establish a predictable and consistent legal framework, ensuring that the day’s status no longer depends on the reorganization of working days around public holidays.
