The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) confirmed Wednesday that 36 public broadcasters are currently set to compete in the contest’s 71st edition, scheduled for May 11-15 in Burgas, Bulgaria.
Bulgarian National Television (BNT) will host the event at Burgas Arena. The participating broadcasters represent nearly 600 million people, according to the EBU.
Canada will make its debut after CBC/Radio-Canada became a full EBU member in July. North Macedonia will return after a four-year absence.
Spain and Slovenia, which boycotted this year’s contest over Israel’s participation, have until December to decide whether to enter the 2027 edition.
The Netherlands and Ireland, which also boycotted this year, have confirmed they will not participate next year. Iceland, another country that stayed away, is absent from the participant list. Israel will compete again.
Hungary’s public media said in early September that participation was a strategic decision for the permanent leadership of the broadcaster undergoing restructuring. It added that organizers had granted Hungary until Dec. 7 to apply.
