Nagy said the farm gate price of milk had dropped to around EUR 0.20 from EUR 0.53, causing significant difficulties in several member states.
He said Hungary was calling for urgent assistance, including private storage aid for butter and cheese and subsidies to help producers through the crisis.
Nagy also addressed Hungary’s joint efforts with Austria, Poland, and Slovakia to push back against the South American Mercosur trade deal in the interest of market protection, advocating for a compensation fund to support sensitive sectors.
He emphasized Hungary’s intent to block the provisional implementation of the Mercosur agreement until all member states have ratified it.
On the Common Agricultural Policy, Nagy reaffirmed Hungary’s position that CAP funding must remain in a separate, two-pillar system with adequate resources and predictability, saying this is essential to shielding European farmers from the impact of free trade deals.
