T he Hungarian Railway Association (Hungrail) said that in Q1 2025, the volume of goods transported by rail dropped by 14.2% y.o.y., while freight tonne-kilometers fell nearly 20%.

Citing data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH), the group noted a 24.8% decline in domestic performance and an 11.9% fall in international activity.

Unit costs per gross tonne-kilometer rose by 13.8% in Q1 2025 compared to the same period of the previous year, driven by higher network access fees, increased prices for shunting services, and inflation-linked wage growth.

Despite efforts by companies to cut expenses, these measures were insufficient to counterbalance cost pressures, Hungrail said.
