Putin to visit Budapest
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin is planning to meet Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in March, a month after German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s scheduled meeting with Orbán on February 2, Hungarian online daily Népszava reported today, citing unnamed sources. Further details on the Russian president’s visit are undisclosed.
Merkel’s five-hour-long visit is said be more than a protocol visit, including a face-to-face meeting with Orbán followed by a press conference, a meeting with representatives of the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities (MAZSIHISZ) and a speech at the Andrássy Gyula university.
Putin visited Hungary in 2006 during the rule of Socialist Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány, whose government had supported the South Stream project, while Orbán, then in the opposition referred to the act as “high-treason”, according to Népszava.
Putin, in his new year’s address mentioned Hungary saying that he “hopes to preserve and expand the potential of Russian-Hungarian relations, which meets the core interests of the peoples of both countries and contributes to stability and security in Europe”
