Students, Teachers join in Hungary rally against university layoffs
In the latest move against the government’s cost-cutting measures at universities, Hungary’s students staged a protest by forming a live chain at the Budapest-based ELTE University on Tuesday. Groups of undergraduate students are demonstrating against the forced retirement of the university’s renowned professors, whose departure, they say, will annihilate certain faculties. Student protests have been on the rise since December last year when the government announced plans to change the education system and sharply reduce financing. The government has so far been reluctant to negotiate with grass-root movements such as the Egyetemfoglalas (Occupy Universities) group or Student Network, claiming it only talks with official undergraduate groups elected by students.
