Martonyi to UN: Fundamental shift in mindset needed
“As we face a turning point in our history and the state of the Earth,” Foreign Affairs Minister János Martonyi told the United Nations General Assembly yesterday, “only with a fundamental shift in mindset may humanity succeed in a transition to global sustainable development.”
Martonyi was speaking as a representative of the UN’s Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals, which Hungary co-chairs with Indonesia.
“The decisions we make today need to be relevant in 15 years as well,” Martonyi said.
The minister pushed as high priority water maintenance and sanitation, which “needs to be addressed in an integrated way to achieve a human rights-based social development, prosperity, and ecological balance.”
Martonyi touted his country’s experience in flood control and wastewater treatment before moving on to emphasizing the Hungarian commitment to disarmament and non-proliferation efforts and that Hungary is coordinating the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty for the 2013-2015 period.
Finally, Martonyi weighed in on some global hotspots, officially condemning terrorist attacks in Kenya and Syria.
