Leading Hungarian figures have expressed their condolences to the Spanish government after yesterdayʼs terrorist attack in Barcelona.

President János Áder expressed his condolences to Spanish King Felipe VI and to all Spanish citizens, wishing the people injured in the attack a speedy recovery. Hungary and the rest of the European Union would continue to play an active role in the international fight against destructive violence, Áder added.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán sent a telegram of condolence to Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy following the Barcelona attack. In the telegram, made public by Bertalan Havasi, the Prime Minister’s Press Chief, Orbán wrote: "I was deeply shocked to learn about the terrorist attack committed in the City of Barcelona today. Please allow me to offer my condolences on behalf of the Hungarian people to the relatives of the victims, and to wish the injured a swift recovery."

The Hungarian Prime Minister noted: "This terrible attack confirms our conviction that the most important task of the period ahead will be to restore the security of Europe and the European people. I can reassure you that my government will continue to support with all means at its disposal our joint struggle against the terrorist attacks that are afflicting Europe."

The Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (KKM) issued a statement shortly after the attack, expressing its deep shock, and condemned in the strongest possible terms what the ministry considered "a cowardly attack".

In its communique sent to the Hungarian news agency MTI on yesterday evening, the foreign ministry wrote that Hungary’s Consulate General in Barcelona is in ongoing communications with the competent authorities and providing all necessary consular assistance for Hungarian nationals in Barcelona and relatives who may have enquiries.

According to information made public by Secretary of State Levente Magyar this morning, one Hungarian national was slightly injured in the attack. Apart from that, no Hungarians had contacted the Hungarian consulate, which indicates that there are no more Hungarians wounded in the incident.

In a personal statement, Hungaryʼs Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó noted: “It is obvious to everyone that there is a link between illegal migration and terrorism.”

Europe must protect itself and guarantee the security of its people, which requires the strengthening of Europe’s Schengen borders and changing Brussels’ migration policy, Szijjártó added. The Hungarian government will continue to do everything in its power to contribute to restoring Europe’s security by protecting the external borders and curbing illegal migration, the minister said.
