MAITT opens new initiative on blood management
The Hungarian Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy (MAITT) is launching a new initiative with the National Blood Transfusion Service (OVSZ) to better manage the blood supply system in Hungary, according to a press release sent to the Budapest Business Journal.
MAITT is also calling on the countries of Central Europe to join the initiative, dubbed Patient Blood Management (PBM). The MAITT chair, János Gál, presented the goals of PBM at a conference on February 1 in Budapest.
PBM is an evidence-based, multidisciplinary approach to optimizing the care of patients who might need a transfusion. It can reduce the need for allogeneic blood transfusions and reduce healthcare costs, while ensuring that blood components are available for the patients who need them.
According to international studies, joining the program may generate an average cost reduction of 20% for healthcare institutions, the press release reported.
