Szijjártó: EU enlargement, energy security key for CEI
The Central European Initiative (CEI) should focus on accelerating EU enlargement toward the Western Balkans and increasing investments needed to achieve energy security, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said at the CEI ministerial meeting in Ohrid, Macedonia yesterday, Hungarian news agency MTI reported.
The minister urged the EU to speed up accession talks with Serbia and Montenegro and to begin talks with Macedonia. Szijjártó also said energy security is still a fundamental issue in Central Europe. Since plans for the Nabucco and South Stream pipelines have been dropped, Central Europe needs to find other ways to achieve energy security, he said, adding that gas systems in the region should be linked and the necessary investments should be made to allow reverse gas flows.
Szijjártó called for an investment in a strategic large capacity gas pipeline that would link the West Balkans and central Europe, thus boosting energy security.
