“Additional measures of influence upon Iran are envisioned, but they are not of the tough or sanctionative kind,” Lavrov said after the six-nation talks on Iran’s nuclear program held Tuesday in Berlin. “They were formulated in the form of calls, mostly to all the countries to show vigilance in developing various ties with Iran, in order not to allow any violations of the non-proliferation regime,” he was quoted by Itar-Tass news agency as saying. “It’s very important, because the very role of the UN Security Council is to protect the regime of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons,” said the foreign minister, adding that Iran is ready to answer all remaining questions concerning its nuclear plan within the next few weeks.
Foreign Ministers from the United States, Germany, China, France, Britain and Russia agreed Tuesday in Berlin on a new draft resolution aimed at getting Iran to heed international demands for it to halt uranium enrichment. The draft will be submitted to the UN Security Council in the next few weeks. The draft resolution “clearly confirms that if Iran agrees with proposals made by the six nations, direct negotiations will be launched to settle all issues on the Iranian nuclear program — direct negotiations involving the six nations, including the United States,” Lavrov said.
The diplomatic standoff between Iran and the West began almost six years ago over suspicions that Tehran’s nuclear work is a cover for an atomic weapons program. So far, the UN Security Council has adopted two resolutions, one in Dec. 2006 and the other in March 2007, to force Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment activities and give up its nuclear programs.
