In a statement issued yesterday, GVH said such a system should be paired with a consumer educational campaign.

GVH also recommended that businesses assess the "genuine" environmental impact of their products and communicate that to consumers in a manner that avoids overgeneralizations and vague claims.

GVH made the recommendations after a probe to determine the effect of environmentally friendly product claims on consumer behavior and the accuracy of those assertions. It found that local companies touted the sustainability of their businesses in "very broad strokes" without backing up their claims.
