The Omicron variant of the coronavirus is responsible for 87% of new infections in Hungary with the Delta variant responsible for the remaining 13%, the chief medical officer said in a video on the government's Facebook page.

The infectivity of the Omicron variant is extreme, and even vaccinated people can be infected, but vaccination can significantly alleviate the course of the disease, Dr. Cecília Müller said on Wednesday.

People who have not yet been vaccinated are the ones most at risk, as any vaccination against the coronavirus increases protection and the body's immune response, she said.
