McDonald’s fined HUF 15 million for misleading ads

Competition

The National Competition Authority (GVH) yesterday reported the fining of the Hungarian unit of fast food chain McDonald’s HUF 15 million for misleading consumers in advertising. The GVH judged McDonald’s had advertised fried chicken products as “grilled” and failed to inform consumers that products sold as “chicken breast strips” also contained ground chicken skin, the latter in violation of guidelines requiring that no processing be done on certain food items.

In response to the decision, McDonald’s Inc. denied any deception of consumers on the part of the company. “We have shown during the course of proceedings that we [complied] in all respects in accordance with domestic and European Union law with all products sold and advertised.”

The company communiqué further explained that the skin matter is required to maintain moistness while heated.

McDonald’s reportedly plans to request a judicial review of the decision.
