British American Tobacco (BAT) is shutting down most of its cigarette production in Pécs (195 km southwest of Budapest) and will produce mainly nicotine pouches there in future, the local unit said yesterday, according to piacesprofit.hu.
Production of just one local brand of cigarette will continue at the factory in Pécs.
BAT Pécsi Dohánygyár managing director Zoltán Orosz said the plant had doubled its output of nicotine pouches in the past year to two billion units, adding that BAT wants to offer consumers alternatives that are "potentially less harmful."
BAT Pécsi Dohánygyár had net revenue of HUF 160.3 billion last year. It employs 910 people, including 822 at the factory in Pécs.
