Epson study considers trends in SME printing habits

Initiatives

A study commissioned by Epson Hungary and undertaken by KutatóCentrum sheds some light on trends in printing among local small- and medium-sized enterprises. The research was conducted in February 2014 and results are based on surveys sent to businesses employing 50 or fewer people and five or fewer printers.

Tops among the survey’s finding was the 62% of SMEs responding that laser printers are used in their operations. Another 31% were using mainly inkjet printers. According to Epson Hungary, “This ratio shows that companies still have the traditional approach when choosing printing technology.” It is the printer specialists’ contention that thinking on printer technology is a bit backward; says Epson Hungary CEO Miklós Fábián, “Although laser printing is a widely prevalent, reliable technology, we think that the recent development of printing technology is now superseding laser printing.”

The survey authors also found that SMEs are generally “not aware of their printing costs and the exact cost per page … Companies are dedicated to reduce printing costs but the tools they choose, including buying refurbished equipment or remanufactured toners, may risk their economical operation. On the contrary, modern inkjet printers could reduce printing cost by 50%...”

Typical operating costs on Epson color printers is just under HUF 2 per page, while monochrome printers run about HUF 0.7 per, according to company statistics.
