In January-April, tourist accommodation establishments recorded 4.7 million arrivals, up 1.8% from the same period of 2025. Domestic arrivals rose by 3.6% to nearly 2.3 million, while international arrivals edged up 0.3% to about 2.5 million.
In April, 71% of guests stayed at commercial accommodation establishments, where arrivals grew by 3% year-on-year. Private and other accommodation establishments recorded a 9.4% decline in tourist arrivals.
Domestic tourism continued to grow during the month. The number of domestic tourist arrivals rose 3.7% year-on-year, while domestic tourism nights increased by 0.8%. A total of 717,000 domestic guests spent nearly 1.6 million tourism nights at accommodation establishments.
Commercial accommodation establishments registered 510,000 domestic arrivals and 1.1 million domestic tourism nights. Hotels accounted for 79% of domestic arrivals at commercial accommodation establishments, with their number rising 6.5% from a year earlier. Domestic arrivals in private and other accommodation establishments increased by 0.7%.
Among tourism regions, domestic arrivals increased the most in the Győr and Pannonhalma region, by 12%, and fell the most in the Tokaj and Nyíregyháza tourism area, by 3.9%. Domestic arrivals were 9% higher in Budapest and 5% higher at Lake Balaton.
International Arrivals Drop Sharply
International tourism weakened in April. The number of foreign tourist arrivals fell by 5.2% year-on-year, while international tourism nights declined by 8%. The statistical office said the drop was significantly affected by a 79% fall in the number of visitors from Israel, which had sent an exceptionally high number of visitors in the previous year.
The 730,000 international guests arriving at tourist accommodation establishments spent nearly 1.8 million tourism nights in Hungary. Commercial accommodation establishments registered 513,000 foreign arrivals and 1.2 million international tourism nights. Hotels accounted for 85% of international arrivals at commercial accommodation establishments, with their number almost unchanged from a year earlier, up 0.1%.
Foreign arrivals in private and other accommodation establishments fell by 17% compared to April 2025. International arrivals increased the most in the Tokaj and Nyíregyháza tourism area, by 15%, and declined the most in the Szeged region, by 16%. Foreign arrivals were 6.8% higher in Budapest, while Lake Balaton recorded an 8.4% decline.
Based on seasonally adjusted data, overall tourist arrivals grew by 2.4% and tourism nights by 0.8% compared to April 2025. Domestic arrivals rose by 4.1% and domestic tourism nights by 2.8%, while international arrivals increased by 0.6% and international tourism nights fell by 1.7%.
A total of 24,436 tourist accommodation establishments welcomed guests in April, including 2,470 commercial accommodation establishments and 21,966 private or other accommodation establishments. Among commercial accommodation establishments, 981 hotels and 994 boarding houses were open for part or all of the month.
Gross sales revenue at tourist accommodation establishments amounted to HUF 87.7 billion in April, 0.5% lower at current prices than a year earlier.
Spending with Széchenyi Recreation Cards at tourist accommodation establishments reached nearly HUF 3.1 billion, down 0.3% at current prices from April 2025.
