Pussy Riot makes appearance at Sziget Festival
Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina, two members of punk-activist protest group Pussy Riot, answered questions about activism during a roundtable discussion at Budapestʼs Sziget Festival on Friday.
Know for their performance protests against Russian President Vladimir Putin, the two members of the group were sentenced to two years imprisonment following one such protest performance in Moscowʼs Cathedral of Christ the Savior, but were subsequently released 21 months later, just prior to the Olympic Games in Sochi.
In reference to that event, Tolikonnikova commented, "Besides Russia it is only in Hungary that I met people who still thought we had danced naked in a church. This is not so; even our heads were masked," she said, adding that one does not need to be naked to carry out radical political action.
Tolokonnikova said she had originally planed to study journalism but switched to art due to the heavy censorship of media in Russia. Her husband, Russian-Canadian artist and activist Pyotr Verzilov insisted there was no independent media in Russia, which is why they decided to take the path of political activism.
