The mayor said the community budget was “democracy itself” and it provided an opportunity for “tangible results to be born from Budapest’s creative energies”.

Votes were cast online and on paper between Sept 1 and 30, and everyone had the opportunity to cast 15 votes, the city’s communications office said in a statement. More than 15,000 people took advantage of the opportunity, casting close to 150,000 votes.

The results were announced in City Hall Park on Friday evening. The winning projects include planting ground cover plants for trees on Bartok Béla Road, purchasing free sports equipment for Margaret Island, creating community barbecue spots in parks and public areas, and creating rain gardens to retain rainfall in place of currently paved areas.

The estimated cost of the supported projects is close to one billion forints.

So far, 32 ideas have been implemented within the framework of the community budget and dozens of ideas are currently under development, it said.
