The NFI-supported international co-production premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival and has been screening in Hungarian cinemas since January, distributed by Mozinet. Léa Seydoux also appears in the film.
Enyedi, the Golden Bear-winning and Oscar-nominated director of “On Body and Soul,” explores the connections between plants and humans in a story spanning different periods and combining philosophical themes with humor.
“Silent Friend” won six awards at Venice, including the Marcello Mastroianni Award for best emerging actor for Luna Wedler. It has since attracted international festival recognition, with the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) shortlisting it among five films for its annual Grand Prix.
Distributors in numerous countries have acquired the film, with 1-2 Special handling its U.S. release.
At the 45th Hungarian Film Week in February, “Silent Friend” won best film, alongside awards for Gergely Pálos for cinematography, Károly Szalai for editing and Mónika Mécs for producing.
The film was co-produced by Germany’s Pandora Film, France’s Galatée Films and Hungary’s Inforg-M&M Film, in cooperation with China’s Redience. Reinhard Brundig and Mécs served as lead producers.
Hungarian production services also contributed to the project. The NFI Film Laboratory processed nearly 30,000 meters of camera negative and supplied 1,500 minutes of high-resolution digital material.
Enyedi wrote the screenplay. The creative team included production designer Imola Láng, costume designer Peri de Bragança, composers Gábor Keresztes and Kristóf Kelemen, visual effects supervisor Béla Klingl and Hungarian casting director Irma Ascher.
Hungary’s selection committee comprised cinematographer Mátyás Erdély, screenwriter-director Gyula Gazdag, film historian and critic Gábor Gelencsér, festival director Kristóf Horváth, young filmmakers’ representative Ágnes Kocsis and producer Sára László.
Each country may submit one film for consideration in the international feature category. Academy members will select five nominees, to be announced on Jan. 21, 2027. The awards ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on March 14.
