Under an EU directive, all member states must collect at least 4 kilograms of waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) per capita by 2009. Between 50% and 80% of this waste, depending on the type, must be recycled. The cost of collection and recycling is covered by electronics manufacturers, which usually pay another party to coordinate the activity.
