The 29th staging of the Black Tie/Highland Dress supper took place at the Corinthia Hotel Budapest on Saturday, Jan. 24.

“Raising 60,000 euros represents another record for the event, and ensures we will remain busy throughout the year,” says Douglas Arnott BEM, the chairman of the Robert Burns International Foundation and the driving force behind the fundraising event.

“To raise such a sum every year is an incredible achievement. From speaking to the doctors and nurses around the country on our visits, who clearly bear the brunt of the chronic lack of funding in healthcare in Hungary at the minute, this money enables us to make a real difference,” he noted.

“As for the supper, the feedback has been good, and it gives us a solid basis for moving towards the 30th Anniversary Burns Supper, to be held on Jan. 23, 2027,” Arnott added.

The Burns Supper is held on the birthday of Rabbie (Robert) Burns (1759–1796), known as the Bard of Scotland, and is celebrated by Scots and friends of Scotland around the world.

The Robert Burns International Foundation is a completely voluntary and overhead-free organization that has raised funds for child healthcare in Hungary since 1998. The RBIF is run by a six-member board; in the interests of full disclosure, BBJ editor-in-chief Robin Marshall is one of its members, having been involved with the Budapest Burns Supper in one way or another since 1999. Accounting and audit are handled by Moore Hungary and KPMG, respectively, as sponsors, ensuring transparency. The honorary patrons are the serving U.K. Ambassador to Hungary and the Hungarian Ambassador to the United Kingdom.
