Speaking in parliament this week, MNB Governor Mihály Varga said the entity harmed by the alleged abuse is the limited liability company responsible for managing the central bank’s properties.

Internal reports suggest that MNB’s real estate subsidiary bears responsibility for the renovation project, which ultimately ended up with a company owned by Bálint Somlai (an entrepreneur who was a friend of Ádám Matolcsy, the son of the former Governor of the MNB) and was completed at 1.5 times the original cost.

The case escalated last week when the MNB filed a formal complaint linked to findings in a report by the State Audit Office that contributed to the scandal.

As reported last Wednesday, one day before the complaint was filed, the MNB called in the bank guarantee of Raw Development Kft., the main contractor for the renovation, and one of the firms owned by Somlai.
