According to a statement from his ministry, Szijjártó noted that the sanctions, imposed by the outgoing American administration just days before leaving office, had created challenges for Hungary and other countries in the region regarding gas supplies.
He described the move as “hostile” by the Biden administration and praised the Trump administration’s “common sense” approach, recognizing that geography and infrastructure dictate energy supply.
Speaking at a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan, Szijjártó called Turkey a reliable partner in safeguarding Hungary’s energy security, citing the delivery of 7.6 billion cubic meters of gas through the TurkStream pipeline last year.
