Debrecen scales up help for tourists
Passenger numbers at Debrecen Airport (eastern Hungary) reached a monthly record of more than 45,000 in July, up 22% from the same month of last year. Meanwhile, the city of Debrecen is installing public digital displays offering tourist information.
In the first seven months of this year, passenger numbers at Debrecen Airport came close to 250,000, development manager László Tamás told national news agency MTI.
Hungarian budget carrier Wizz Air operates ten weekly flights to London, three to Eindhoven, and two to all other destinations from Debrecen, Tamás said. Lufthansa flies five times a week to Munich from the city, he added.
The airport has direct scheduled flights to seven European cities - London, Paris, Munich, Milan, Moscow, Eindhoven, and Malmo - as well as to Tel Aviv in Israel, Tamás said, adding that Wizz Air will add another eight destinations from December, including Barcelona, Dortmund, Doncaster, Basel, Milan-Malpensa, and, from March 2019, Malta, Cyprus and Palma de Mallorca.
According to a press release sent to the Budapest Business Journal, Diána Széles, the deputy mayor of Debrecen, recently announced the installation of three digital tourist information displays in the most frequented areas of the city. The 55-inch, full HD screens will be installed in front of the Hotel Aranybika (Kossuth tér), in front of the Fórum Mall (Csapó utca) and at the Köd Theatre (Nagyerdő).
The screens will display visual content between 12 noon and 6 p.m. every day, including navigation to the most visited sites, and cultural programs in the city. The city also plans to launch a mobile phone application with cultural tips for tourists and locals.
