Sources: EC to give Hungary e-toll system good marks
The European Commission has found Hungary’s new toll on trucks and lorries worth recommending to other European Union member states, daily Magyar Nemzet reported yesterday. Citing sources in Brussels, the ’paper went on to state that the EC found little to criticize in a review of the toll, which will soon be published.
In September, a spokesman for European Commissioner for Transport Siim Kallas said the EC had informed Hungary that revenue generated from the toll exceeded the cost of maintaining road infrastructure and further that the e-tolls were “not in line with European Union directives on several points.” Hungary introduced the toll, which charges vehicles in proportion to road use, on July 1.
Magyar Nemzet said the toll’s units of distance could be shortened before year-end, making charges more fair for vehicles that make short trips. The toll could also be modified to allow post-payment, considering haulage companies’ invoices are paid only 30-60 days after they are submitted.
