Minister: Hungary’s environmental status “generally favorable”
While describing Hungary’s environmental status as generally favorable, Environmental Affairs Minister Zoltán Illés nevertheless admitted yesterday in a press conference following release of the Rural Development Ministry’s official report that “there are areas where greater attention is required.”
As an example, Illés cited problems with particulate matter; according to Illés, particulate-matter emissions are causing problems both within the European Union and Hungary because they “are responsible for significant air pollution and cause serious damage to health.”
The problem is one of the biggest the EU and Hungary face, in Illés’s opinion. Handling this type of pollution is one of the greatest problems both in Hungary and within the EU, he added.
Further, Illés emphasized what he sees as vulnerability in Hungary’s water stock: According to the minister, some 94% of Hungary’s surface water originates beyond national borders, “meaning that bilateral intergovernmental relations are of great importance in preventing pollution.”
