Government launches anti-refugee ad campaign

The Hungarian government has introduced a series of full-page advertisements highlighting the many flaws of the European Commission’s mandatory plan to distribute refugees within the European Union, government-friendly daily Magyar Hírlap reported on Friday. The ads were launched last week, while a new batch of ads have also been released this week.

The full-page ads feature an image of the Hungarian and EU flags and contain such messages as: “The compulsory refugee quota endangers our culture! Illegal immigrants do not respect our laws. They do not share our common cultural values. The compulsory resettlement would change our countryʼs ethnic, cultural and religious composition”.

The ads are part of nationwide campaign reportedly designed to protect Hungarian citizens from the threat of “illegal immigrants” and therefore, the threat of terrorism, but are seen by critics as nothing more than fear mongering.

Last Thursday, the Hungarian government launched legal action against the European Court of Justice, to prevent European Union countries from being forced to take a quota of refugees. It was filed a day after a similar suit by Slovakia.
