László Sólyom Passes Away

Former President of the Republic László Sólyom died on Sunday, the Secretariat of the former President of the Republic informed state news wire MTI.

According to the statement, Sólyom passed away after a long fight with medical issues.

Current President Katalin Novák noted that Sólyom was an internationally renowned jurist who, first as a participant in the National Round Table and then as the first President of the Constitutional Court, played a decisive role in the democratic transition and in the "creation of democracy and the constitutional framework that governs our lives".

"I am grateful to him for sharing his experience with me," said the current head of state.

She also added that in his memory, the national flag was lowered to half-mast at the Sándor Palace.

Sólyom served as President of Hungary between 2005 and 2010.
