EP sues EC over failure to apply conditionality mechanism

The European Parliament on Friday sued the European Commission for its failure to apply a conditionality mechanism that would penalize European Union member states for rule-of-law violations that affect the management of EU funding, according to a report by state news wire MTI.
"As requested in parliamentary resolutions, our legal service has brought an action against the European Commission for failure to apply the Conditionality Regulation to the Court of Justice today," EP President David Sassoli said.
"We expect the European Commission to act in a consistent manner and live up to what President von der Leyen stated during our last plenary discussion on this subject. Words have to be turned into deeds," he added.
The conditionality mechanism could cut or freeze funding for member states in which established breaches of the rule of law are deemed to compromise management of EU monies.
Hungary, together with Poland, lodged a challenge to the conditionality mechanism with the Court of Justice of the European Union in March
