EC Unfreezes Another EUR 2 bln of Hungary's EU funding

EU

The European Commission has released another EUR 2 billion of Hungary's suspended cohesion funding, European Union Affairs Ministry state secretary Barna Pál Zsigmond said in a post on social media on Tuesday.

The funding was unfrozen after the EC accepted the Hungarian government's self-assessment regarding education and gender equality, Zsigmond said.

Conditions have been met, according to the EC, and Hungary may start to apply for budget reimbursement, he added.

In December, the EC released some EUR 10 bln of Hungary's EU funding after acknowledging remedial measures the country had taken regarding judicial independence, but around EUR 20 bln remained frozen.
