The government has decided to limit the number of residency permits issued for guest workers to 65,000 in 2024, the National Economy Ministry said on Thursday, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

The measure was taken "in the interest of protecting Hungarian workplaces", the ministry said.

The government also decided to prohibit the hiring of workers from countries outside of the European Union in around 300 occupations, it added.

The ministry noted that rules in force at present allow companies to hire third-country nationals only if positions can't be filled by Hungarian workers.

Last year, 39,000 residency permits for guest workers were issued.
