MPs of the governing Fidesz-KDNP alliance have nominated Tamás Sulyok, who heads the Constitutional Court, for the office of President of the Republic, Fidesz parliamentary group leader Máté Kocsis said on Thursday, news agency MTI reports.

Kocsis said Sulyok was the "candidate best suited for the office".

He also announced that Fidesz's party leadership would propose that Tamás Deutsch lead the Fidesz-KDNP list in the upcoming European Parliament elections.

István Simicskó, who heads the parliamentary group of KDNP, said support for Sulyok's candidacy was unanimous.

He said KDNP MPs, like Fidesz MPs, would back the vote in parliament on Monday for the ratification of Sweden's NATO accession. He welcomed the planned visit to Budapest on Friday by Sweden's prime minister and said "very important talks" were expected at the meeting.
