Cabinet chief defends procurement law as ‘strictest’ ever
Even though Parliament yesterday fast-tracked a law allowing officialsʼ families to bid for public tenders, the Hungarian government has adopted the “strictest public procurement legislation of all time”, Cabinet Chief János Lázár said today at his weekly press conference, Hungarian online daily origo.hu reported.

Yesterday, the Hungarian Parliament approved legislation allowing the relatives of top officials to apply for public procurement tenders, as long as they live in separate households. The law was approved in a special procedure that allowed it to be passed within 24 hours of being introduced in Parliament.
“My relatives cannot apply for public procurement tenders,” Lázár said today. “We accepted a principle that a distant relative, who does not live in the same household of a top politician, can apply for public procurement tenders.”
