22 U.S. Congress members express support for CEU
U.S. House of Representatives member Nita Lowey has been joined by 21 members of Congress, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, in addressing a letter to U.S. Ambassador to Hungary David B. Cornstein expressing support for the Central European University (CEU) in its struggles to remain open in Hungary.
The statement, signed by politicians including California Senator Dianne Feinstein and New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, commends Cornsteinʼs visit to CEU earlier this year, as well as his supportive statements. The letter emphasizes how the fate of the educational institution may affect relations between the U.S. and Hungary. The letter also calls CEU "an institution of academic excellence that enjoys bipartisan support in the U.S."
"As you know, the ongoing absence of a signed agreement between the State of New York and the Hungarian government has put CEU in an untenable situation," the members of Congress tell Cornstein. "The closure of CEU would not only harm Hungarian higher education, it would also have the potential to impact bilateral relations between our two countries. We would deeply appreciate your continued efforts to communicate the urgency of signing this agreement before the end of September in any upcoming meetings with Hungarian government officials."
