MOL raises diesel prices, now 15% higher than in February

Hungarian oil and gas company MOL will raise its wholesale diesel price by HUF 3 per liter from today, industry insiders told Hungarian news agency MTI, with prices at the pump rising to around HUF 417 per liter as a result.

The wholesale price of diesel has been rising sharply this year, with a liter of diesel costing only around HUF 363 as recently as this February, according to motoring magazine vezess.hu’s fuel price graph. The steep increase means that diesel is currently around 15% more expensive than in February.

Petrol prices are currently around HUF 405 per liter, up from approximately HUF 356 per liter in February.

The tendency is in line with the increase in oil prices on the world market, with the price per barrel for Brent Crude now hovering around the USD 76-77 mark, having hit its lows under USD 63 in February, according to oil and energy news site oilprice.com.

The weakness of the Hungarian forint may well be an additional contributing factor to the rising fuel prices, noted MTI. The value of the U.S. dollar against the forint has risen from the 250s at the beginning of the year to the 280 range, according to the official website of the National Bank of Hungary (MNB).

MOL will not change its wholesale petrol prices on this occasion. The company takes its decisions on fuel prices twice a week.
