In spite of a marked increase in new vehicle sales, the average age of vehicles on Hungarian roads continued to rise in the first half of this year, state news agency MTI reports

The average age of vehicles climbed to 14.1 years at the end of June 2018 compared to 13.9 a year earlier, a summary of data published by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) shows.

The tendency can be observed across nearly all categories, with the average age of passenger cars rising to 14.2 years from 14 years. The average age of commercial vehicles is increasing by the same amount, to 13.1 years from 12.9 years, with the average age of trailers also up by 0.2 years, to 8.6 years. The average age of motorcycles is closing in on the two-decade mark, advancing to 18.5 years from 18.1.

Contrasting with this trend, the average age of buses fell to 13.5 years from 13.9, due in part to the effects of the launch of a national bus purchase program in 2016.
