EC to Hungary, six other states: Comply with energy efficiency
The European Commission has formally requested full compliance from seven member states, including Hungary, on their obligations as described in the European Union's Energy Efficiency Directive.
Hungary, along with Austria, Cyprus, Estonia, Lithuania, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom, have been requested to transpose the directive into national law within two months. If compliance is not shown, the EC may refer offenders to the Court of Justice.
Under the Energy Efficiency Directive adopted by the European Union in October 2012, member states must establish and apply minimum energy performance requirements for buildings, ensure certification of energy-efficient performance and complete regular inspection of heating and air conditioning systems.
Under auspices of the regulations, energy-efficiency levels are planned to reach 17% by 2020, as compared to the 10% measure of 2012. The EC will be reviewing the directive in 2014.
