Bill would slap hefty fees on plastic bags
Hungaryʼs government aims to introduce a HUF 38 environmental product fee on plastic bags thicker than 50 microns from the start of next year, draft legislation posted on the governmentʼs website shows, as reported by state news agency MTI.
The bill would also introduce a HUF 20 fee on plastic bags of between 15 and 50 microns thickness, and a HUF 5 fee on plastic bags that are thinner than 15 microns.
At present, the environmental product fee on plastic shopping bags is HUF 1,900 per kilogram.
About a week earlier, the Ministry for Innovation and Technology said it planned to raise product fees for disposable plastic bags from next year and aimed to introduce a ban on the bags from 2021. Hungarians use more than 80 plastic bags a year, on average, many of which end up in landfills, the ministry noted.
In July, environmental group Greenpeace launched a petition to demand that the Hungarian government ban single-use plastic bags. The NGO is calling for disposable plastic bags to be phased out in Hungary from January 1, 2020, as part of a drive to reduce global plastic pollution.
