Survey: More spending on Xmas gifts, at web shops

Retail

Results from a survey commissioned by Budapest Bank and undertaken by local polling agency GfK Hungária, Hungarians plan to spend an average of HUF 54,000 on holiday presents this year, HUF 10,000 more than in 2011.

About 41% of interviewees said they start to make savings in earlier months for their holiday spending while 25% said they tighten their belts after the holidays. One-quarter said they do not need to save because of the additional costs, compared to 19% who responded thusly in 2011.

Although consumers still buy 63% of their presents at shopping centers, web-based stores now take second place with 48%.

The most popular gifts are clothes (57%), cosmetics or perfumes (51%) and books (49%), although GfK noted a significant number of male respondents said they will be giving a mobile phone or smartphone as a Christmas gift to their wife or partner.
