Mazars: status of British citizens will change next year

Analysis

Brexit means that the EEA Citizenship Registration Certificates issued to citizens of Great Britain and Northern Ireland will expire on December 31, experts of international audit, tax and advisory firm Mazars warn.

The individuals concerned will have until the end of 2021 to apply for a national permanent residence permit.

"Those concerned can apply for a national permanent residence permit under a favorable procedure until the end of the year. It is important to note that the application will be assessed by the competent authority within 30 days," pointed out Sándor Szmicsek, partner at Mazars.

Due to the approximate time limit for submitting an application, Mazars believes that employers should check with their U.K. national employees in time to ensure that they have taken the necessary steps to ensure that their stay and employment in Hungary can continue unhindered.

As a general rule, a U.K. national or a family member of a U.K. national who is a third-country national and who has a registered Hungarian residence can apply for a national permanent residence permit if they meet the other legal conditions.

However, Hungary provides the possibility to obtain a national permanent residence permit for British and Northern Ireland nationals who do not have a registered Hungarian residence but who can provide credible evidence that they have resided in Hungary on a permanent basis before January 1, 2021.
