Orbán: Hungary tourism numbers “remarkable”

Following a meeting with Lake Balaton hotel directors in Siófok on Monday, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán proclaimed that Hungary’s 2013 tourism data was remarkable in terms of number of tourists, tourist nights and hotel revenue. 

“Considering that we are part of an area – the continent of Europe – that is going through a severe economic crisis, the sector’s results are more than remarkable,” Orbán said in reference to Hungary’s tourism sector.

Orbán noted that in 2013 a total of 8.8 million guests spent 22.8 million nights in hotels in located in Hungary, generating revenue of HUF 166 billion. In February, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) reported that the number of arrivals rose by 4.6% year-on-year in ‘13.

The PM stated that the tourism sector helped Hungary's GDP grow in 2013 following economic contraction in 2012.
