KSH: Hungary’s jobless rate down to 6.4%

Hungary’s jobless rate decreased by 1 percentage point to 6.4% in the period of July-September, as compared to the same period a year earlier, Hungary’s Central Statistical Office reported today.
“The number of 15- to 74-year-old unemployed men decreased by 21,000 to 152,000, and their unemployment rate by 1.0 percentage point to 6.1%, while the number of unemployed women declined by 18,000 to 141,000, and their unemployment rate by 1.0 percentage point to 6.7%,” KSH reported.
Data include people employed as fostered workers in public work schemes. Fostered workers are employed by the government and paid less than minimum wage to work at jobs such as street sweepers or metro ticket takers.
Data from KSH reveal that the average duration of unemployment changed from 18.9 to 19.3 months; 49.2% of unemployed people had been searching for a job for one year or more.
“According to the administrative data of the National Employment Service, at the end of September 2015, the total number of registered jobseekers was 342,000, which means a 10.1% decrease,” KSH said.
Data from KSH – in compliance with International Labor Organization standards – includes people in all forms of employment who have worked more than one hour a week during the period or are on sick leave or paid absence, and those working abroad for less than one year.
Péter Cseresnyés, state secretary of the National Economy Ministry, said earlier this week that the Hungarian government is planning to launch new programs to increase employment rates in the country.
