Hungary’s jobless rate dropped by 0.9 of a percentage point to 4.3% in the April-June period, compared to the same period last year, Hungary’s Central Statistical Office (KSH) said today in a first release of data.

However, some professionals argue that the actual rate is higher as the government includes those on its public work scheme in the figures.

The unemployment rate of 15–74 year-old men dropped by 1.3 pp to 4%, while the rate of women in the same demographics was down by 0.3 pp to 4.6%.

The average duration of unemployment was 17 months, according to KSH data. Some 44.1% of unemployed people had been searching for a job for one year or more, i.e. were long-term unemployed.

At the end of June, the total number of registered jobseekers had decreased by 4.1%, compared to the same period a year earlier, according to the administrative data of the National Employment Service.
