Hungary: Truck tracking system to be used for rail freight

The Hungarian government is in the preliminary stages of creating an electronic tracking system, currently in place for truck deliveries, to monitor railway shipments, according to a report published by daily newspaper Magyar Idők today.
The National Tax and Customs Office (NAV) and the government are looking to prevent tax cheats through electronic security measures and have held meetings with railroad transportation companies to help implement the measure. The government plans to introduce a functional system which will suit the unique characteristics of rail freight transport, and will take time to smoothly introduce the new system.
Rail Cargo Hungaria (RCH), responsible for more than two thirds of Hungarian rail freight, agreed with the government’s new measure, according to comments made by the organizationʼs Chairman, Imre Kovács, in the report.
The Hungrail working group, which lobbies for Hungarian railway industry interests, mentioned to the paper that railway companies have requested state support to cover the additional costs and responsibilities required by the new system.
The electronic tracking system for cargo trucks has been active since the beginning of 2015.
