Hungary levies tax on solar panels

Given that solar panels are considered a significant contributor to pollution – category 3 on a scale where batteries are considered a safer category 2 –  owners of such devices will be required to pay HUF 114/kg of total panels in environmental protection fees, Hungarian online daily Origo reported yesterday.

The LMP, or green party, said it is “unacceptable” that the government is levying taxes on environmentally friendly solar panels, and the party sought to initiate changes to the legislation. LMP also called on President János Áder to object to the legislation and “to act for environmental protection”.

Last week Áder announced at a press conference that his office is setting up a new directorate for environmental sustainability.
